Leadership initiatives at the University of Calgary

Not an exhaustive list, but a sampling of some of the university’s key programs

Program Description
University of Calgary Leadership Program (UCL) The UCL is the University of Calgary's formal leadership training program. This non-credit certificate program is free for all University of Calgary students (undergraduate and graduate) and is meant to supplement the academic experience. It consists of a series of workshops exploring four different aspects of leadership: Personal Leadership, Team Leadership, Community Leadership, Organizational Leadership.
Camp LEAD First-year students spend three days and two nights in August at Camp Silversides learning the fundamentals of what leadership is, through both interactive sessions and outdoor adventures.
Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) A year-long certificate program designed for first-year students. Students learn and use multiple leadership techniques, theories and models to help develop essential skill sets to contribute to academic and personal success and are each matched with a mentor.
Sophomore Leadership Program A second-year leadership program to build on the Emerging Leaders Program, it helps students take the skills of ELP and put them into practice. Students in the SLP explore mentortship from alumni / professionals in their academic or career interest area.
Co-Curricular Record This program provides students with an officially documented and recognized record of a wide range of leadership experiences, including volunteering, membership in student clubs or participation in other leadership opportunities on campus. Upon graduation, the record can be used to complement resumes or application to graduate or professional school.
Student Activities Fund Through this fund, financial support is provided to initiatives that enhance student engagement, educational goals and leadership development. Funded equally by Quality Money and the University of Calgary.
Common Reading Program Introduced in the fall of 2011, this program provides each first-year admitted student with a copy of a selected book to read through the summer. The university then hosts an online Facebook forum where students can discuss the book with other new students and provides discussion sessions during Fall Orientation. The program introduces students to academic expectations, encourages student engagement, demonstrates the importance of reading, writing and critical thinking, fosters faculty-student and student-student interactions and serves as an intellectual and social orientation to the university.
Student Success Centre The Chancellor Cuthbertson Student Success Centre supports and enables students to achieve the success they desire, through a variety of programs and workshops. The Centre also helps students connect with the full range of leadership opportunities on campus.
Senior Week Designed as a complement to the University of Calgary’s Graduating This Year (GTY) program Senior Week helps graduating students begin to think about making their transition from the University of Calgary into the work world, and/or onto further schooling. Workshops include topics such as mastering the art of networking, making a great first impression, beginning your career search and paying off student loans.
Canadian Conference on Student Leadership The University of Calgary participates in this annual, national conference for student leaders. Founded by student leaders at Wilfrid Laurier University in 2006, it is an opportunity for students and professional staff across Canada to meet and discuss student-related issues as they pertain to leadership. The CCSL was hosted in Calgary in 2008 and in November 2011.
Scholars Academy Program The Scholars Academy guides top undergraduate students in their academic and professional development. Students work directly with a dedicated program co-ordinator who provides academic and scholarship support, promotes community commitments and encourages student engagement. This support enables students to compete and win prestigious awards and scholarships, and leads to even greater opportunities.
Graduate Leaders Circle A collaboration of the Graduate Students’ Association and the Faculty of Graduate Studies, this program provides Vanier and Killiam graduate students with support, resources and opportunities to develop advanced leadership skills to ensure they are prepared to be the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. First Year Advisory Group The first year advisory group is the representative body of first-year students at the University of Calgary, and members of the advisory group will sit on various university committees, and act as a liaison between first-year students and other student organizations, faculties, as well as the university at large. Overall, the advisory group discusses issues of concern for first-year students.
Calgary Serves Calgary Serves is a series of co-curricular community service-learning programs for University of Calgary students who seek to get involved with communities at the local, national or international levels.
Peer Helpers Program Peer Helpers are upper-year students who support the transition and success of new and continuing students through a variety of activities that support campus programming. All peer helpers will have the opportunity to participate in training specific to their role as well as specialized leadership training through Leadership and Student Engagement.
Yamnuska Leadership Community For residents in the Yamnuska Hall residence, the Yamnuska Leadership Community provides activities and programs to foster leadership development and academic and career success, both individually and collaboratively as a community.
Women’s Resource Centre As part of its Leadership Pillar, the Women’s Resource Centre provides practical, gender-sensitive leadership training, coaching, and opportunities for volunteers and practicum students.
Maier Student Leadership Program While taking part in the Maier Student Leadership Program, members of clubs and teams at the Schulich School of Engineering attend dozens of seminars, meetings and one-on-one coaching sessions. These events provide skill development in the areas of business and finance, project management, strategic planning, fundraising and board governance.
President’s Award for Excellence in Student Leadership These awards are presented to graduating students (undergraduate or graduate) who have combined excellent academic achievement with outstanding extracurricular contributions to the university.
PURE: Program for Undergraduate Research Experience The PURE provides financial support to undergraduates to conduct research for 8, 12 or 16 weeks between May and August. The support is for students at any stage of their undergraduate program and recognizes that a summer research project can have a significant positive impact on a student's overall experience during their undergraduate studies, by developing a variety of skills.
